People of Earth and assorted other sentients,
User 3.0 is on the way. It’s compatible with ExpressionEngine 2.0. And it’s also compatible with EE 1.6.8. Not sure when you will be ready to convert your customers to ExpressionEngine 2.x? Not sure you’re ready to let go of your beloved ExpressionEngine 1.x? User doesn’t care. You don’t have to care either. You can use the same set of files on either platform and be a happy camper.
Wait a minute? How is this possible? ExpressionEngine 2.0 has a new architecture!
It’s magic. It’s pure Paul Burdick magic.
We talked to our own clients at length. Many of them said that they had many reasons for moving slowly into ExpressionEngine 2.x. We realized that to serve our clients and customers in the best possible way, we had to support both platforms. Paul took up the challenge and made it possible.
What is the charge?
The cost of User 3.0 will now be $99.95, an increase of $10 from the current price. This is the first increase in price for User since it was released, even with numerous feature additions and improvements. We hope you will agree that the cost is still worth it. And, naturally, we will continue improving User.
Further, if you have a current copy of User, there will be an upgrade fee of $9.95. Keeping in line with EllisLab’s changes, we will now be charging for “left of dot” upgrades (ex: 2.x => 3.x) for our Add-Ons. These “left of dot” upgrades will happen when there is a significant upgrade to the features and abilities of a module. We believe that the full conversion of User to support ExpressionEngine 2.0, while still working in the ExpressionEngine 1.x branch, is one such significant upgrade.
If you purchased User in the last 3 months, your upgrade fee is waived. This will be the case with all of our upgrade fees. If you have purchased an Add-On within 3 months of a left-of-dot release; free!
Is everything being upgraded by a full version?
No. Some of our Add-Ons are quite complex. Converting them to ExpressionEngine 2.x is requiring a significant investment of time and money. We’ll be calling these left-of-dot upgrades and charging a modest fee as EllisLab has. However, some of our Add-Ons lend themselves to easier conversion. There will be no need to charge upgrade fees for these.
What about recent new software?
We have released quite a bit of software in the last 3 months, so you need not worry about an upgrade fee for stuff like Super Search, Friends, Template Morsels, Repeet and the upcoming Facebook Connect. Don’t sweat it. Keep buying stuff. Keep using it. We’re doing our best to stay out of your way, meet your needs, and keep you coming back for more.

Is this Paul Burdock magic be released to the public so other developers can see how you managed to support both platforms? Or do we need to buy the add-on, and scour your code to see how it was done?

SierraBravo,
At the moment the magic code is native to the module package itself. Do you think other developers will be interested in this kind of cross-compatibility?

I couldn’t imagine why they wouldn’t be. It would allow devs to write for both platforms. Purchasing the User module would show me how you did it, but I was just wondering if you planned on releasing an official ‘white paper’ or blog post on how you did it.

Ten bucks is too cheap.
