File Upload plugged into SAEF rather than through Pop-Up

Is there anyway in the world we can have a more traditional file upload field rather than a popup window for it? I’m a bit perplexed as why ExpressionEngine opted for such a non-traditional method of uploading information.. I do see it’s uses, but it totally breaks conventional wisdom for the front-end for those more technically declined.

I recall reading some threads on the EE boards about this, but no resolutions. Was wondering is Solspace has any idea how to implement this considering you’ve done some amazing modules already.

I have been thinking of running ExpressionEngine for a couple sites, but one important aspect of them is user-generated content. A normal SAEF is fine, but when it comes to uploading images and files, a more traditional method is a total must.

Cheers,
D.

Mr Dimsum,

We have this on our list, but as of yet we have no software for this. I think that Paul Burdick wrote an extension for this, so you might check the extension list at expressionengine.com.

I’ve had a thorough look through implementations and while there have been some (including the one you have mentioned), there are none that do the job well enough to stand out on it’s own. The most prominent is probably one mentioned on the forum, just dubbed “Phoebe’s”.

I’m more than willing to commission some of these as priority to speed up the process of things (including some requests and inquieries from the User board for your module) if it needs be to get these churned out quick enough. I just find that EE and 3rd party extensions are just shy of what I want to do for my projects.. But it’s close!

Mr Dimsum,

Sounds like you need some development help. Go ahead and contact PieMan directly through a forum PM. We’ll talk about cost and timeline and get some customizations prepared for you.

I also would like a SAEF file upload method.  An addiotnal feature request I have for this is that I can make subdirectories based on the logged in user’s member ID (to keep things organised, and to stop directories with 1000s of files in them), you can’t overwrite/edit existing uploads, and it ideally keeps the original filename as closely as possible.  I specifically want to use this on a site where public members can upload one peice of media to a weblog, a bit like flickr or youtube.
