Reviewing the docs, am I right in thinking I could use the User module to have two different registration forms on my site, each of which would automatically assign new registrations to a different member group? e.g. by adding a (presumably hidden) field specifying the desired group_id to each registration form.

You can have as many registration forms as you wish, however, it is currently not possible that you can assign Member Groups on registration via a form field.
We consider this a serious security risk. However, we are looking into creating a way to do this “safely”

Thanks for the quick reply. Talking it over a bit more I think we can work round this with just the single default group, then manually upgrading membership as required to allow access to “additional” content.
