I’m having a strange bug in the EE forums

For some reason and at random the {author} name isn’t being added to “forum_last_post_author” in exp_forums.  This means on the front page where it shows all the forums and last post info, the authors name of the last post isn’t appearing (the link the their profile appears, but there is no text to make the link clickable).  This seems to be happening at random, sometimes the name will appear after you make a post, sometimes it wont.

The reason why i’m thinking it might be a problem with the User module is i’ve only seen it on my forum and another site’s forum and both sites have User installed.

You can read more about it here:

Do you think this is a bug with user?

I’ve also noticed it seems to be doing it with comments too!  Not displaying the author name, seems to be random though.

I think i know how to replicate the bug now.

If post a comment or forum post, and then edit my profile (im doing so though the User module front end). The comment author and forum last author are set to blank…

Or at least that is what just happened when i updated my profile.

My profile edit templates don’t have any hidden values for username or screen_name, I’m assuming they aren’t needed?

Hi Joobs,

Would it be possible for me to get Super Admin access to ip1zine.com? I have already created an account under the Screen Name “Mr. Wilson”, with the e-mail address brent at solspace dot com. If you’re up for that, drop me an e-mail to let me know the URL of your control panel after you’ve changed my account’s access privileges.

On second thought, that’s probably not necessary. The fix looks pretty simple. I’m going to PM you a copy of mod.user.php. Can you give it a test drive and let me know if you still see the problem?

Ok installed the new mod.user.php

The old blank usernames are still blank.  Should they get updated automatically, or should edit their info manually in the database (if i edit my username from the CP it appears to correct the blank screen name in the forum front page, but not the comments)?

I’ve tried posting a new comment and forum post, updated my profile, and the names appear correctly for these new posts.  So it appears to be working now.  However, i never fully tested/figured out what steps caused the bug in the first place, but for now I am assuming this has got it.

Thanks for the quick help smile

Sorry, Joobs, I should have been more specific. The blank info won’t automatically be updated. I have to step out of the office for a bit, but when I get back I will whip up a script that should get everything back to normal.

Yeah, thanks for the speedy fix smile

I never got that script Mr WIlson talked about, but there aren’t very many comments on the site so I can just update manually.  But the scipt might be useful to have in my toolbox smile
