Not sure if I’m missing something obvious, but ...

Is there a way to sort the related entries (put main entry up top) using: {related_entries}{/related_entries}?

i.e. can you orderby="main", or something, in {exp:weblog:entries}?

There is currently no way to orderby in the Related Entries variable pairs. I’d otherwise suggest using the Related_Entries:Entries function for more control

Yeah, being able to custom order these would be huge.
