Can this be done in User?

What we needed to do on a straight EE install was to use Simple Commerce to allow users to make a donation and then when returning to the main site assign them to a group that showed they had donated to Project A.

So, for example, John Smith donates to Project X through Simple Commerce and on completion is then assigned to the Group “Project X Donators” - all straightforward and no problem BUT it falls down if John Smith wants to donate to Project Y as well as Project X because EE does not allow members to belong to more than one group.

Enter User! As I see it, it’s a good solution to fake multi-groups but is it possible to use User categories to fake multi-group membership in conjunction with a payment gateway?

Basically the set-up would be: have a Bank Payment system (not Simple Commerce now - the client has ditched it after a bad experience with Paypal) where a signed up member pays through the gateway and on return to an EE page is assigned to a User category?

Has anyone done it?

Actually just realised that User assigns categories from the front-end only - this might be a problem as there are hundreds of members and the client don’t want any of them to actually be able to edit/assign categories themselves but rather solely be the result of the payment action or else assigned by an admin…..

Ho, hum…back to the drawing board!

tarquin,

We regularly build front-end templates for the use of admins. We set the permissions on those templates so that only appropriate groups may access them. You can use this method to handle the member category management as well as many other functions for your client.
